Week 6 ~ Social Control

At Montgomery College, one could find millions of examples of both formal and informal social control in every day life. Informal Social control is evident in the interactions between students, professors, and employees of the college, where conformity and peer pressures play large roles. Similarly, media that is available on the campus (i.e. posters, video clips, and pamphlets) serve as informal social control. One can find formal social control in the rules and regulations that the college adheres to, such as the code of conduct for students, the smoking ban on campus, and a professor's syllabus.

  1. very nice, your the first person to mention media that is on the campus as a form of social control. I also enjoy watching any youtube videos that people put on their blogs and the asch(sp?) expirement was very interesting. After all, if I were put in that position I would answer wrong too thinking am I the one who's nuts?! ^^

  3. I totally agree. And yes, there is media in our school. We recieve emails in our student accounts like spam mail! I think that the schooling system represents more or a structure than a control but I don't want to take anything from it being a control as well. Its a structure built to help us climb the "ladder". To seperate the ideas, think about obedience and deviance in control as opposed to a structure built to benefit everyone, should they choose. Although, I wrote about the exact same thing on my blog! Im just now having a revelation.
